In the face of increasing challenges – including overpopulation, security threats, preservation of natural resources, and more – it’s no longer a question of whether cities need to become “smart”, it’s simply a matter of when. City officials the world over now understand how crucial it is to adopt IoT technologies to deliver connected experiences throughout their cities. But two major barriers still remain: cost and complexity.

Today, Cisco – already recognized by Navigant Research as the leader in Smart Cities – took two more major steps to alleviating the remaining barriers preventing cities from delivering valuable connected services to citizens:

  • We’ve launched the City Infrastructure Financing Acceleration Program, a $1 billion program aimed to make it easier, faster and more affordable for cities around the world to fund and adopt technologies that will transform their communities.
  • We also introduced added functionality to Cisco Kinetic for Cities, our platform for Smart Cities which is now integrated into the Cisco Kinetic IoT data platform. The new features provide enhanced support for public safety, from new full-policy automation options to an improved dashboard with integrated video.

For the complete details on today’s announcement, see the press release here.

I am very excited about today’s news, because I know the power that IoT – and particularly IoT data – has to fundamentally transform a city and the lives of its citizens.

For far too long, cities have been bogged down with the complexity of figuring out how to connect everything – from street lights, to garbage cans, to parking meters, and more – so that they could introduce smart services that improved people’s daily lives. The connectivity problem, and especially the ability to automate the connectivity management of millions of things, is a hard one. And we’ve been helping cities solve that problem for years with our Cisco Jasper automated IoT management platform.

But today, as more and more things become connected, too often the data from these devices remains locked inside its source. There has been no programmatic way to move the right data to the right applications at the right time to drive real results. And this problem is exacerbated in Smart Cities environments, where there are high volumes of disparate connected things.

This is why we created Cisco Kinetic, which is a new class of IoT platform – which helps companies create an IoT data fabric – designed precisely to address these challenges. It starts by extracting data from its sources to make it usable, then computes data to transform it and reliably deliver it to realize business outcomes, and finally it moves data programmatically to get the right data to the right applications at the right time – including multicloud, multiparty, and multilocation – executing policies to enforce data ownership, privacy, and security.

Cisco Kinetic for Cities continues to build on the successes we’ve already had with deployments in cities and communities across the globe. Our customers are already seeing how sharing real-time data – across city agencies and departments, with city residents and visitors, and with businesses—can provide new ways for city leaders and operating personnel to gain a clearer understanding of how their communities and cities operate. It gives them new ways to identify and respond to challenges that may affect multiple agencies and populations.

And that’s what it’s all about – harnessing and maximizing the value of your data so that you can provide real outcomes. Outcomes like reducing energy usage and traffic, optimizing city lighting, boosting public transportation ridership and revenues, increasing public safety, and so much more.
