Summer is a great time to get away, but air travel can rain on your parade with maintenance delays, confusing airports, and lost luggage. That’s where the Internet of Things (IoT) is making a powerful difference to improve the travel experience.
Our latest infographic spotlights six key ways IoT connectivity is working behind the scenes to enhance our summer holidays – and IoT’s influence on air travel is one we can all celebrate.
Accelerating maintenance for on-time flights
Many airlines are leveraging IoT to capture complex data from jet engines in real time. Embedded sensors help maintenance crews remotely monitor engines, and quickly identify and diagnose problems to reduce travel delays.
IoT-enabled jets, basically flying data centers, are becoming industry standard, which is good news for passengers.
Improving the passenger experience
Some major airports are also innovating connected services to help simplify your travel experience. For example, you can install a mobile app that connects with i-beacons that track your movement around the airport. The app then delivers in-the-moment assistance such as personalized directions to your gate or baggage carousel, or nearby spots to grab your preferred snack.
Want more peace of mind when shipping a pet? IoT innovator, Sendum Wireless, is partnering with some airlines to provide tracking technology that monitors real-time data on location, temperature, and humidity to help keep your traveling critters more comfortable.
What’s next? Keep an eye out for “smart luggage.” Companies are scrambling to introduce suitcases embedded with sensors and GPS connectivity that make it easier to track your bags, wherever they are.
