Summertime… and the living is easy. That’s how the song goes, but it doesn’t mention that the Internet of Things (IoT) is invisibly working to make it even easier –especially when it comes to relaxing with any good book you can imagine.

Remember the days of packing for a vacation and trying to cram a variety of books into a suitcase? Technology took care of that by introducing electronic readers (or e-readers), which have rapidly evolved into personal, portable digital libraries.

Our latest infographic highlights six ways IoT connectivity plays an important role in our summer activities, including when we kick back to enjoy a great read.

A world of books at our fingertips

E-readers use wireless connectivity to let us browse online and download books, magazines, articles – anything we feel like reading. And even if we’re not in the mood for a book, these great little connected gadgets give us access to watch videos, play games, listen to music, even surf the web.

Some devices, such as certain models of the Amazon Kindle, even come with embedded 4G network capability. Customers don’t need to worry about access to Wi-Fi because they’ve got an anytime, anywhere connection to a world of digital content.

Managing connectivity for e-readers

Providing a device with embedded connectivity to many millions of customers worldwide is a tall order. Companies like Amazon need to efficiently manage the connected service lifecycle for every device. That means testing it during production, deactivating it for shipment, activating it after purchase, and ensuring reliable performance for the best customer experience.

How do they get it right? Many businesses rely on an IoT platform to streamline operations using automated rules to rapidly deploy, manage, and globally scale connected services for millions of devices. And real-time visibility and remote diagnostics for every device make it dramatically easier and more cost-effective to identify and fix problems quickly, sometimes before the customer even notices.

And when you’re on the beach and browsing for the perfect read, that seamless experience can make all the difference.
