M2M to IoT, overnight

March 15, 2016

October 2015. The south of France is inundated with the equivalent of two months of rainfall in less than two hours. Cars and passengers are stranded all along the Riviera.

The auto manufacturer PSA whose brands include Peugeot and Citroen, is able to quickly figure out which of their connected cars are impacted and if the car is still connected to PSA’s telematics systems. In many cases, PSA is able to remotely re-initiate communications with disconnected vehicles to ensure vital safety, security and diagnostics services continue to function.

PSA was able to do this because its service provider, POST Luxembourg, had integrated an IoT services platform, Control Center, earlier that year. In a single night, Jasper helped POST upgrade 1.1 million PSA vehicles to the Control Center platform, which enables real-time visibility and control over services delivered to all of their connected vehicles,.

Literally overnight, PSA went from simply having M2M connectivity to an IoT service platform that enables them to proactively manage every aspect of their fleet’s connected service lifecycle. Today, PSA is able to automate and integrate all aspects of managing communications with their fleet of connected cars into their core business processes.

Control Center’s diagnostics tools, business rules, and web service APIs enable PSA to identify communications service issues in real time and trigger internal support workflows to resolve problems. In addition, PSA can share this data with its dealer and partner ecosystem to support customers in the field.

This is a single example of how the traditional world of M2M, which primarily consisted of discrete silos of connected devices capturing data for historical analysis, can be transformed in the era of IoT. Cars and remote devices aren’t simply monitored – they are proactively managed and integrated with other business and partner systems to create a holistic connected service experience.

Although we tend to think about IoT applications for new connected devices, let’s not forget the hundreds of millions of connected devices already in place that can benefit from ubiquitous connectivity, big data analytics and web-enabled collaboration.
